Wordless Books

Beautifully illustrated wordless books are a terrific resource for children who are yearning to be storytellers. The child can sit with you, go through the pages, and make up a story of her own. In the process she’ll be learning the basics of strong writing but shhh, don’t tell her!

You can help her along by asking what happened next or prompting her to tell you what the characters said. It really doesn’t matter because the point is to have your child interact with you and the book, exploring the use of words in the process and feeling the pleasure that comes with putting words to thoughts. You’ll also be forging a strong positive association between reading and feeling safe and happy.

David Wiesner  is the author of several wonderful wordless books. You’ll find many of them in the Public Library. You’ll also find them here.
