Our goal as parents is to raise children who are ready to take on the world. We want them to be confident, competent, healthy, and happy. That’s a lot to accomplish. Luckily, we’ve got years to get it right!
When it comes to instilling a love of words – whether spoken or written – it’s important to remember that, A love of reading starts with you.
What can you do? Make sure to include Snuggle-Time in each day.
If you have a child who is too young for nursery school, make snuggle time part of your midmorning routine. Take a break with your child. Snuggle up on the couch or a cushy chair. If you’re more of an on-the-floor person, make a nest out of cushions and pillows and quilts. Bring several board books along and ask your child to pick a book. Snuggle up and read together.
When your preschool child gets home from nursery school or camp, it’s probably time for a snack and chat about the day. That’s important. Equally important is some snuggle time at bed time. Pick out a favorite picture book or bedtime book and snuggle up. If the story is familiar enough, your child can recite it along with you. The important thing is to make it a time that is pleasant and important to your child.
Snuggle-Time gives you some special time with your kids each day. It gives your kids some Snuggle-Time with you. It also gives reading and books a special time each day, and sets the stage for the conversations you’ll have with your kids as they get older.
Until next week!
