Once Upon a Time

The ability to tell a story is essential for any writer. Without a feel for a beginning,
a middle, and an end, it’s hard to organize your writing and get much of anything
done. For the youngest crowd we’ll meet twice – once to tell stories as a group
and once to dictate or write and illustrate stories of our own.

Do You See What I See?

You can tell a kid that details are important, but just exactly what does that mean?
In this workshop we meet twice to work on descriptions. Our work will include the
use of details and just-the-right word.

Complete classes and workshops are offered twice this summer.
Bethesda – Week of July 6th and again Week of July 27th
Gaithersburg – Week of July 13th and again Week of August 3rd
Rockville – Week of July 20th and again Week of August 10th

Word Choice Counts

The right word can make a world of difference but it’s hard to choose the right
word unless you know more than one way to say something. We start with the nuances
of words – what they mean at their core – then move on to creating descriptions
that pack a punch.

Details That Matter Most

Which detail is the right detail that will make a difference to the reader? Which
will help to create a picture in the reader’s mind? We’ll take a sentence and color-code
it to be sure we touch on each of the senses while selecting the details that make
the description pop for the reader.

Writing the Middle School Essay

Moving up to middle school is a big step. A bit of practice with a longer-than-usual
essay can’t hurt. We’ll meet once or twice, depending upon the week or location
to give your rising middle grader the practice needed to enter middle school with
confidence.

Beach Reads

Cozying up with a good book on a summer day is a recipe for some much-needed relaxation.
Not every pre-teen races to grab a book. Maybe your teen is one of them. Then again,
maybe your teen spends days without coming up for air. Why not give him/her to opportunity
to pick and talk about summer reading with other kids? It will make the solitary
practice of reading into a social event.

Middle School Vocabulary Boot Camp

Most middle school kids could use some vocabulary work. Frankly, that work can be
boring in the extreme – especially on summer break. At our vocabulary boot camp
we’ll supply pizza, games, fun, and prizes as incentive to get your kids to stretch
their brains!

Complete classes and workshops are offered twice this summer.

Writing the High School Essay

Crunch Time. If your student can’t write a decent essay, there’s not going to a
lot of joy in the fall. We can help. We’ll meet and work on what makes an essay
an essay. We’ll provide plenty of practice, too.

SAT Vocabulary Boot Camp

The PSATs and SATs will rear their ugly heads in the near future. Vocabulary work
is no fun – especially in the summer. We’ll do the work. But we’ll do it with pizza,
prizes, games, and fun.

Writing the College Application Essay

Look at it this way. Getting the essay done before school starts in the fall eliminates
one huge hassle. Not sure of a school or which prompt your student will need? We’ll
work on more than one. Bottom Line? We’ll get it done. And we’ll suffer so you don’t
have to.

Much Ado About Shakespeare

We remain convinced that there are literature lovers out there in this age group.
If your student is one of them, we’d love to have him/her join us for a look at
some of the key scenes and monologues from the bard’s work.

Must the Future be So Bleak?

The dystopian young adult novel is hot at the moment. We’ll take a look at Hunger
Games and one other novel that the group selects. We’ll take it apart and take a
look at why it works. We’ll also take a look at what makes it a dystopian novel.
Why are we doing this? Because it’s fun!
